Getting a Sky remote to behave usually comes down to a quick “handshake” between the remote and the box. Depending on whether you have the newer Sky Stream/Glass or the classic Sky Q, the steps are slightly different.
1. The “Universal Fix” (Reset & Re-pair)
Most issues are resolved by wiping the remote’s memory and starting fresh.
For Sky Stream & Sky Glass
- Reset: Press and hold 7 and 9 together for 3 seconds (the light should flash).
- Pair: Press and hold 1 and 3 together for 3 seconds.
- Follow On-Screen: A message should appear saying “Your remote is now connected.” Follow the prompts to sync your TV volume.
For Sky Q
- Reset: Press and hold 7 and 9 until the light on the remote flashes 4 times.
- Pair: Point the remote at your Sky Q box and hold 1 and 3 for 2 seconds.
- Setup: The on-screen menu will guide you through controlling your TV’s volume and power.
2. Quick Troubleshooting Tips
If the steps above didn’t work, try these “tech support” classics:
- The Battery Check: It sounds simple, but Sky remotes are picky. Use alkaline batteries (avoid Zinc-Carbon/Cheap ones) and ensure they are seated firmly.
- The Camera Trick: Point the remote at your phone’s camera and press a button. If the remote is working, you’ll see a flickering purple/white light on your phone screen (which is invisible to the naked eye).
- Clear the Path: Ensure nothing is blocking the front of your Sky box. Even a glass cabinet door can sometimes mess with the infrared signal.
- Reboot the Box: Unplug your Sky box/puck from the wall for 30 seconds, plug it back in, and wait for it to fully restart before trying to pair the remote again.
3. Controlling your TV (Volume & Power)
If your remote works for the Sky box but won’t turn the TV off or change the volume:
- Go to Settings > Setup > Remote Control.
- Select your remote type and choose Control your TV.
- Enter your TV brand and select Find it for me. It will cycle through codes until your volume changes.
